Just like the Xbox 360 has it's own "red ring of death", the PS3 also has it's own blinking red light problem. It's something nobody wants to see, but unfortunately, it can happen. That being said, you being here tells me that your looking for a solution, which is a good thing.
Right off the bat, if you aren't completely sure what the problem is, contacting Sony to find out what it might be is a good idea. Chances are, it could be that the PS3's hard drive is overheated. But once again, if you aren't sure what's wrong, give Sony a call.

Usually, when PS3 owners get the blinking red light problem, it's because there is some sort of problem with the connection of the hard drive, or that the drive itself can potentially be broken.
What you have to do is reset the drive. One of the ways this can be done is by actually removing the hard drive from the PlayStation 3, and then inserting it back into the system, making sure it's done correctly. If after you do this the red light is still showing up, you may need to get a new drive or unfortunately in some cases a new PS3. Hopefully that's not the case.
That said, in most cases, the requirement of a new PS3 is unnecessary. If you do have to end up getting a new hard drive, no worries, there are lots to choose from, and it shouldn't be that difficult to find one for pretty cheap.
